Demokratie ist keine Selbstverständlichkeit.
Sie lebt davon, dass Menschen und Institutionen Verantwortung übernehmen und Grenzen ziehen, wenn demokratische Grundlagen angegriffen werden.
Die AfD vertritt faschistische Positionen und Strategien, die wir als zutiefst antidemokratisch einschätzen. Teile der Partei arbeiten systematisch daran, Vertrauen in demokratische Institutionen zu untergraben, fremdenfeindlich zu agieren und gesellschaftliche Gruppen gegeneinander auszuspielen und autoritäre Politikmodelle zu normalisieren.
Das steht im klaren Widerspruch zu den Werten, auf denen eine offene Gesellschaft beruht.
Die immer neuen Skandale sowie strafrechtliche Verfahren gegen Mandatsträger dieser Partei erschrecken uns. Sie bestätigen unsere Einschätzung, dass die AfD für uns kein politischer Gesprächspartner sein kann.
Für uns ist die AfD daher keine Partei, mit der ein demokratischer Austausch möglich wäre. Wer systematisch gegen demokratische Institutionen arbeitet, kann nicht zugleich als normaler politischer Akteur behandelt werden.
Als Verlag treffen wir daraus konkrete Entscheidungen.
- Wir lehnen die politischen Positionen der AfD entschieden ab.
- Wir arbeiten weder direkt noch indirekt mit der AfD oder mit ihr verbundenen Organisationen zusammen.
- Wir verkaufen unsere Bücher nicht an AfD-Strukturen oder an Personen, die diese aktiv unterstützen.
- Wir unterstützen Projekte, Initiativen und Organisationen, die sich für demokratische Werte, gesellschaftliche Vielfalt und eine offene Gesellschaft einsetzen.
- Wir engagieren uns dort, wo wir einen Beitrag leisten können.
Es ist höchste Zeit, Haltung zu zeigen und für die Demokratie einzutreten. Solange dies noch geht.
Literatur und Kultur sind Teil des öffentlichen Raums. Wer Bücher veröffentlicht, gestaltet diesen Raum mit. Deshalb verstehen wir unsere Arbeit nicht als neutral gegenüber politischen Entwicklungen, die demokratische Grundlagen infrage stellen.
Unsere Bücher richten sich an Menschen, die an eine offene Gesellschaft glauben – an Leserinnen und Leser, die Vielfalt, Freiheit und demokratische Regeln als Grundlage des Zusammenlebens begreifen.
Mit Kräften, die diese Grundlagen ablehnen oder bekämpfen, führen wir keinen Dialog und arbeiten auch nicht zusammen.
Wer diese Grundlagen ablehnt, gehört weder zu unserem Publikum noch zu einem demokratischen Deutschland.
Wir brauchen keine rechtsradikale Sekte in Regierungsverantwortung.

Statement by the publisher on the AfD
Democracy is not a given. It depends on people and institutions assuming responsibility and drawing clear lines when democratic foundations are attacked.
The AfD (Alternative für Deutschland) represents fascist positions and strategies that we consider profoundly anti-democratic. Parts of the party are systematically working to undermine trust in democratic institutions, promote xenophobia, pit social groups against one another, and normalise authoritarian models of politics.
This stands in clear contradiction to the values on which an open society is built.
The continuing stream of scandals and criminal investigations involving elected representatives of this party alarm us. They reinforce our assessment that the AfD cannot be regarded as a legitimate political interlocutor.
For us, the AfD is therefore not a party with which democratic exchange is possible. Those who systematically work against democratic institutions cannot simultaneously be treated as ordinary political actors.
As a publishing house, we draw concrete conclusions from this.
We firmly reject the political positions of the AfD.
- We do not work – either directly or indirectly – with the AfD or with organisations connected to it.
- We do not sell our books to AfD structures or to individuals who actively support them.
- We support projects, initiatives and organisations that stand for democratic values, social diversity and an open society.
- We engage wherever we can make a meaningful contribution.
The time has come to take a clear stand and to speak up for democracy – while it is still possible.
Literature and culture are part of the public sphere. Those who publish books help shape that space. For this reason, we do not regard our work as neutral in the face of political developments that call democratic foundations into question.
Our books are addressed to people who believe in an open society – to readers who understand diversity, freedom and democratic rules as the basis of living together.
We neither enter into dialogue nor collaborate with forces that reject or actively fight against these principles.
Those who reject these foundations are neither our audience nor part of a democratic Germany. We have no need for a far-right sect in positions of governmental power.
